| Origins - What's in a name? |

Many will notice the unusual pub sign, which is different on each side. Whilst it is not unique to have a different image on each side, it's definitely not common. In the past the pub sign has been hung the other way around. Currently those heading into Lympstone will see the image of the Redwing boat, whilst, those heading out of the village will see the Redwing bird. What is a Redwing? Well this is two fold, just like the pub sign. Redwing - Boat
The rig is a straight forward bermudan sloop without spinnaker but with one trapeze for the crew. Although the class is very small there are a few fleets of Redwings dotted around the UK which are raced enthusiastically, often all year round. The Redwing is light & fast for a clinker dinghy but is very durable and long-lived. Most of those built are still sailing, including No.1, built in 1939. Vital Statistics

Approximately one million redwings reach the UK every year. The first redwings reach the UK in October. They spend the autumn in hedges and orchards, where they feed on fruit and berries. As winter draws on, and the fruit is used up, they move onto open areas in search of earthworms. They leave again in March and April. |
